Coming off watch that night was a shocking end to my thoughts on the romance of going to sea in small boats. Eight of us, nearly the entire crew complement of that boat, shared a cabin 8 ft by 8 ft by about 7 ft high, where at any time four of us would sleep in bunks stacked two high. After a week, the dank mixture of eight men deprived of a shower or change of clothes, wet oilskins and a hundred farts, had combined to create a stench so powerful that the air felt viscous to breathe. 'Animals – no standards,' muttered Mike, an ex-fighter pilot, as the two of us struggled out of our waterproofs at four in the morning, holding on as the ship heeled from the wind. He was referring to the other two on our watch, who'd slipped to bed gleefully idle and fully dressed. Jimi, the Kiwi bosun of the boat, got out of our bunk so I could get in. 'I flipped the pillow, mate,' he explained, 'so you dribble into your side and flip it over for me when you're done.' He disappeared into the black companionway, leaving me to sleep my four allotted hours. As journalists, we don't do these things because they are easy, I reflected grimly. We do them because they are free.
